The 21st June will mark the 70th anniversary, when Columbia records held a press conference at Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City, to announce the arrival of the ‘Long Playing Microgroove Record’ – the LP to You and me. The LP offered 25 mins play per side of a 12 inch record five or six times as much as one of the then fashionable 78-rpm shellac disks. If you dropped a 78 it usually shattered and it had a lot of audible scratching when played whereas the new LP were made of vinylite, nonbreakable and silent-surfaced.

The first microgroove LP pressing released was Columbia ML4001, the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E Minor with soloist Nathan Milstein, and Bruno Walter conducting The Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra Of New York

Another factor which helped was the introduction magnetic tape for recording and editing following it’s discovery in Germany during the last days of the war and like the rocket technology it was liberated and used to good effect by America. A year after the LP came out the 7 inch came out. After 10 years the LP only accounted for 25% of record sales, with 7 inch record 73%, totally replacing the 78 which only had 2% of record sales in the USA. Jukeboxes were at their peak in the 1950’s and were now mainly filled with 7 inch records. The LP only exploded in the 60’s due to the further expansion recording time on an album and the explosion English-language popular music. Sales started to decline in the late 70’s due to the appearance of compact cassettes.

On the LP’s 40th anniversary it was widely predicted that the compact disc would totally replace vinyl albums. This failed to happen due to audiophiles, DJs, and fans of indie music. Fans of music are still looking to collect old vinyl, vinyl reissues or to collect vinyl versions of new albums when the opportunity presents itself. Record store day in the UK also generates some interest in vinyl, but it’s still the smaller bands and labels that are igniting the demand for vinyl, so it’s unlikely Vinyl will ever disappear as long as there is an active music scenes for new bands to flourish in.

The 70 albums pictured are random selection from my vinyl LP collection – alphabetical ordered as that’s how they are stored ( I didn’t always buy vinyl, sometimes tapes for covenience but on occasions they would snap or unravel ;/, I also borrowed records from friends and taped them) My music collection is a mix of vinyl, tapes, CD’s and MP3’s. I guess if the Japanese had continued to develop the laser to play vinyl records which removed the scratches in the sound, I would still be mainly using vinyl. The one event that made me switch to CD’s was when I went to get Killing Joke’s “Millenium” single on 12″. The copy I bought from Jumbo records in Leeds had a cigarette burn in the vinyl. When I took it back all further 18 copies all had the same burn mark . So I had buy it on CD. It’s easier to transport, store and use CD’s and MP3’s as a DJ.

Iniate
What I really like about being involved in the goth/dark alternative music scene is the chance to discover and make people aware of music from all around the world. So here is a review of an excellent band from the land down under Sound Like Winter Their album Iniate opens with the track The Boneman The deadpan vocals remind me of cult 90’s goth band Wreckage featuring a strong backbone of tight drums and bass, spooky keyboards and varied guitar bursts complete this great track! Porcelain – is definately a track to ignite the dancefloor. Great lyrics!

Ishmael’s Bonesreminds me slightly of The Beautiful People but with more bouncey bass. Aberrations– has a hint of The Pixies. Nice! The Distance Between – is caught in the shadow of the Cure. Damn catchy!

Hollow – features some very nice 80’s tinged synths reminding me of early Simple Minds and Joy Division Great guitars and catchy lyrics yet another blitz for the dancefloor. Love it!

Sanity Is Calling will have you bouncing around the room. Great! Black Caverns – A great piece of drumming and beating bass drive this monster of a track, hints of early Fields Of the Nephilim in the guitars whilst the song drives firmly along the road of postpunk. Love it! Double Barrel Scorpio – has a hint of Big Electric Cat, a hint of The Cure’s post punk pop make this a great track! Walk In Black reminds me in places of Empire Hideous and vocals in places sound like Rozz Williams Nice! You Fell For It – reminds me of early Midnight Oil colliding with Wreckage. The album closes with Sounds Like Winter a New Order tinged duet. Nice!. A great debut album with the potential for the band to become more widely known and definately one to catch live!

knutz

In 2011 The Knutz from Brazil released their debut album Ghost Dance Party with spawned some killer tracks with the title track becoming a hit on the dancefloor a nice synth edge colliding with a deathrock fist with a hint of early Rozz Williams Christian Death.
The Knutz return in 2015 with their new album “We Are The Monsters” The album opens with Where The Souls Dance Free the intro has very Nosferatu feel before escalating via a great crescendo of synths and guitar into a spooktacular goth horrorpunk classic. I really like the change of guitar styles, nice use of wah wah and great change in synth styles – great spooky organ, keeps this fresh and original and ensures this will be a smash on the dark daencefloor. Love it! We Are The Monsters is the first single of the album this track really does establish the new sound of The Knutz which I am sure will lead to a lot more people becoming a fan. It reminds me of the first time I heard Miguel & The Living Dead or The Last Days Of Jesus or Antiworld, Shadow Reichenstein, and was totally blown away not just by their albums but also in their live performance. Great psychobilly spooky vocals from Daniel, tight drums and bass pound against frenzied ghoulish guitars and epic spooky synths. Love it! Destined to be a classic! Lady Shadow shows the maturity of a band who aren’t afraid of developing an original sound whilst reaching out for fans of different generes of dark music. Great use of synths again produce a mix of 80’s tinged new wave.Great! BBBatz is the second single could be the result of Iggy Pop’s Blah Blah Blah, Meatloaf’s Bat Out Hell, Eddie Cochoran’s Something Else and a sprinkling of Rocky Horror Show being mixed in a blender. It’s Damn addictive! Epic! Bubbles Of My Bubblegun has a 60’s Batman theme feel in places with a hint of punk and psychobilly all done in the trademark Knutz style which should ensure another smash on the dancefloor! Living In A Nightmare has a similar musical vein to Violet Stigmata’s Brown Jenkin due the great use of tight synths and drums driving the song along. Another example of the great musical diversity of The Knutz! Another classic. Love it! Right Or Wrong the guitars in places remind me of The Church whilst the keyboards remind me of The Fuzztones Nice! Apple Sour Girl – is very bouncy reminds me of early Bella Morte. Crossing The Ocean again has an 80’s new wave feel akin to early Simple Minds Great! Lovers reminds of The Fuzztones – Nice One! Time To Time brings the album to a close with a Goth Rock ballad. For me The Knutz based on this album, should be playing next year’s WGT as live I am sure they would be a highlight. Make sure you get your copy WE ARE THE MONSTERS to be released soon.
