The 21st June will mark the 70th anniversary, when Columbia records held a press conference at Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City, to announce the arrival of the ‘Long Playing Microgroove Record’ – the LP to You and me. The LP offered 25 mins play per side of a 12 inch record five or six times as much as one of the then fashionable 78-rpm shellac disks. If you dropped a 78 it usually shattered and it had a lot of audible scratching when played whereas the new LP were made of vinylite, nonbreakable and silent-surfaced.

The first microgroove LP pressing released was Columbia ML4001, the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E Minor with soloist Nathan Milstein, and Bruno Walter conducting The Philharmonic Symphony Orchestra Of New York

Another factor which helped was the introduction magnetic tape for recording and editing following it’s discovery in Germany during the last days of the war and like the rocket technology it was liberated and used to good effect by America. A year after the LP came out the 7 inch came out. After 10 years the LP only accounted for 25% of record sales, with 7 inch record 73%, totally replacing the 78 which only had 2% of record sales in the USA. Jukeboxes were at their peak in the 1950’s and were now mainly filled with 7 inch records. The LP only exploded in the 60’s due to the further expansion recording time on an album and the explosion English-language popular music. Sales started to decline in the late 70’s due to the appearance of compact cassettes.

On the LP’s 40th anniversary it was widely predicted that the compact disc would totally replace vinyl albums. This failed to happen due to audiophiles, DJs, and fans of indie music. Fans of music are still looking to collect old vinyl, vinyl reissues or to collect vinyl versions of new albums when the opportunity presents itself. Record store day in the UK also generates some interest in vinyl, but it’s still the smaller bands and labels that are igniting the demand for vinyl, so it’s unlikely Vinyl will ever disappear as long as there is an active music scenes for new bands to flourish in.

The 70 albums pictured are random selection from my vinyl LP collection – alphabetical ordered as that’s how they are stored ( I didn’t always buy vinyl, sometimes tapes for covenience but on occasions they would snap or unravel ;/, I also borrowed records from friends and taped them) My music collection is a mix of vinyl, tapes, CD’s and MP3’s. I guess if the Japanese had continued to develop the laser to play vinyl records which removed the scratches in the sound, I would still be mainly using vinyl. The one event that made me switch to CD’s was when I went to get Killing Joke’s “Millenium” single on 12″. The copy I bought from Jumbo records in Leeds had a cigarette burn in the vinyl. When I took it back all further 18 copies all had the same burn mark . So I had buy it on CD. It’s easier to transport, store and use CD’s and MP3’s as a DJ.

Finally the wait is over for what I believe is the best debut album of 2015 from one of the most exciting postpunk/new wave influenced live bands in the UK and the best band to come out of Leeds in eons!
The album opens with the track Missing In Action like an approaching express train, the track builds into a frenzied fist of powerhouse postpunk music whilst the vocals grab you by the throat. Great! Immaterial Man demonstrates the maturity of the musicianship with extremly tight drum and bass, driving addictive guitars which Red Lorry Yellow Lorry would have been proud of. This will have you dancing around the room. Impressionist – Intense guitars, pounding tight drum and bass and yet more great vocal delivery remind of the new wave band Into Paradise. A song to smash any dancefloor! Love it! Beautiful Place To Die shows Autobahn are also in touch with their darkside with a dark brooding song which captures the dark depression of Joy Division lyrically (reminds me of the atmosphere of Shadowplay) whilst clearly showing their own unique musical charm. Great track!

Dissemble – Not afraid to experiment with a very 80’s feeling track. Love the mix of music being played backward and normally creating a massive black sonic soundscape with the perfect vocal delivery – reminds me a bit of Yellowcake UF6 from The Stranglers Nice!
Society – is for me one the best songs Autobahn have written so far and should be played everywhere. I can only liken it to the first time I heard The Skids, The Bravery, Early Editors or The Soft Moon and thought wow! The Aural equivalent of 10,000 volts across the temple this will have you bouncing around the room. Great guitars. Epic! Ostentation Great drumming on this track will pound a hole in your head! Lovely menacing vocals and some blistering post punk guitars will ignite the dancefloor. Love it! Passion what an intense track! It reminds me of Red Lorry yellow Lorry when they were great with Mick Brown on drums. Perfect postpunk! Epic! Suicide Saturday – for some reason this song reminds me musically in places of The Rose Of Avalanche twisted nicely with additionally keyboards and with Craig’s vocals unearths a new level of darkness. F*ck me what a great track! Love it! Deprivation -love the way this songs slithers smoothly between tempo changes and still keeps you hooked. What a great ending to a great album. If John Peel was still alive Autobahn would be on every night of the week! A 13/10 album and I for one hope Autobahn will now get the attention their song writing and live performance deserves!

On Saturday 22nd August I went along to the best venue in Leeds at the moment The Brudenall Social Club for Autobahn‘s release party for their new album Dissemble Main support for the night were Sievehead a great postpunk/ punk 3 piece from Sheffield who totally eclipsed the brilliance of their demo which can be found here http://sievehead.bandcamp.com.

Autobahn were yet again on fire and really are already a great live band, great lighting and a smoke machine added an extra layer of darkness to their original post punk sound and menace.

screature_four columns_coverScreature formed in 2008 in Sacaremento, California and released their debut album “Screature” in 2013. Four Columns is their latest album release and what terrifying magnificent monster it is! The album burst’s into life with  Plastic Point Of View – The guitars have a mix of early Stories For Boys smashing into L7. Great! Liz has a very powerful vocal delivery reminds a bit of Scarlet Remains. Very tight drums and bass make for an impressive powerhouse dark punk punch! Yes! Crumbling – Liz’s vocals totally eclipse Gitane Demone and Great guitars from Chris Orr. what an epic slice of psycho dark punk to set the dancefloor on fire. Love it! Down Boys shows what is missing from the current deathrock scene. Love the way the keyboards and guitars weave together. Damn catchy! Faceless– The guitars remind me very much of early Chrome with a hint of early PIL in the bass and drums. Powered on by a great vocal delivery.Epic! Half Past Midnight wow!. The guitars sound like The Cramps played at the speed of The Ramones. The sound of Dark Punk disco inferno. Great! Lost Ones – is one of the longer tracks on the album at around 4 minutes in length. This has very strong Chrome feel in the music but the vocals and guitar work lift it to a new level. Liz’s vocals are as good as Gitane Demone or Diamanda Galas. Epic!

One Hundred Lies unleashes the Fuzz guitar sound definately one for fans of The Fuzztones. Another bomb for the dancefloor! Love it! Channel F has some very nice choppy high speed Killing Joke guitars. Yet another track to firebomb the dancefloor. Great! Laws of Intrigue– the perfect song to get out of control on the dancefloor reminds me of classic early Christian Death.Bop! High Rise Escape – If The Doors had been a punk band with a female vocalist they might have sounded as great as this!Wow! Graves & Heirs is the A-Bomb that explodes at the end of the album. A punkpsychofuzzbilly Masterpiece! What a kin great album! I really hope Screature will be invited to the UK as they are at the top of my must see list and they should be at the top of yours!
